"Is it just me, or is the Marvel Cinematic Universe getting a little stale?" This question got asked of me recently. My answer was an emphatic "no", though I am beginning to believe that this may be happening to others as well. The fact is the MCU needs some fresh material and new characters. We also need some more competition in order for them to stay exciting. Enter Netflix's latest animated superhero show, "Marvel's Defenders". Now, before we get started, I want to make one thing clear. "Defenders" does not meet the Marvel Cinematic Universe's level of quality, but that's not what it's trying to do. What it is trying to do is tell an exciting and new over-arching story of Marvel superheroes that can be accessed by anyone with a Netflix subscription (or even those who have a friend or two with a Netflix account). If "Defenders" cannot reach the heights of the MCU, nobody else will either.We begin in a small New York City neighborhood which is about as quirky as they come. It's packed with colorful shops, hotels, boutiques, and restaurants. There are even beautiful parks. The neighborhood seems perfect for a family to finally find some peace and prosperity. The family lives in the newest residence in the neighborhood. It's an expensive house with a stunning roof top garden where everyone can relax after a long day of work or study. They are all very happy with their new home…until an old friend pays them a surprise visit. She has created an enormous group of superheroes to destroy the city! It's up to the Defenders to stop her before she taints this small city forever. The colorful neighborhood is a great setting for the series. It's a nice imaginative twist on the typical superhero setting. The cel-shaded animation looks great and is pretty much on par with any other action-packed Marvel movie. Despite this, the visuals feel like they're not quite there yet. There are some scenes where they appear to be in desperate need of some polish and attention to detail, but they quickly pass without notice. The characters' facial expressions also tend to look a little awkward at times (particularly Stick and Colleen Wing). It's particularly admirable how closely "Defenders" stays in line with the source material while also being its own thing at the same time. Most of the characters, plot, and overall feel of the show are taken directly from the original comic book stories. It's like the series is an animated version of "The Defenders". Unfortunately, I feel at times that their way with adapting certain plot elements was less than perfect. For example, they always refer to the Ringer as "She-Hulk", despite her clearly having a male form in many of her appearances. And this series takes place in New York City, where She-Hulk resides.
